He grew up during the Napoleonic Wars, when the Slovene Lands were changing hands between France and the Austrian Empire. The official language of instruction in his schools changed several times during his childhood between French and German, neither of which was his native tongue. In addition, Latin and Greek were required subjects for all students. Thus, by age 16, Frederic Baraga was multilingual—a skill that would serve him well in later life. WOOD OF THE SNOWSHOE
+ AVE BEADS: Deep, rich brown wooden Aves are 10 mm, chosen to symbolize the old snowshoes before metal was used. PATER BEADS: old hand finished fur trade beads. These are known as 'cornerless cube vaseline beads' (Bohemian, mid to late 1800s) and are much more of a pale yellow than shown. Note natural wear as this assures us these beads are very old and worn from use. Framed with soft green faceted 'gemcuts' and antiqued metal caps to symbolize the lakes. + (Fur trade beads were used by early Jesuit Missionaries as currency with the indians for valuable beaver fur pelts and the opportunity to evangelize) + FATHER FREDERIC BARAGA (1797-1868) In 1843 he founded a mission at L'Anse, Michigan. During this time he earned the nickname “the Snowshoe Priest” He traveled hundreds of miles cutting trails in the snow each year on snowshoes (similar to the one below) during cold Michigan winters in areas deep in 'Lake-Effect' snows. PATER BEADS: Blue faceted Swarovski crystal (Austria) with antiqueed filigree caps and beads. God spoke of filigree in scripture several times, 'to be used to set the stones' into the breast piece. ++ KONA DOLOMITE How beautiful to know these stones, now beads - called 'Kona Dolomite' rested in the earth, undisturmbed since God spoke them into creation as one of his creatures billions of years ago. Each a signature of his voice. And then to be mined. + MORE ABOUT KONA DOLOMITE Kona Dolomite is a stone mined near Baraga / Ishpeming in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where the Rosary Workshop is located. According to our Google references: "It is named after the Kona Hills south of Marquette County, Michigan where it is found. Kona Dolomite is an ancient rock in which formations of fossil stromatolite (blue-green algae) occur. The stone is between 2.1 to 2.2 billion years old. These stromatolite formations are from some of the first life on earth. MISSIONARY, BISHOP, GRAMMARIAN Father Frederic Baraga Servant of God was a Slovene American. This Roman Catholic Priest was a missionary, bishop, and grammarian. (29 June 1797 - January 19, 1868) He ministered to the indians in the Great Lakes area of the United States. He was the first bishop of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Diocese of Marquette) from 1853 - 1860. He spoke several languages and took on the task of translating and publishing a dictionary in the Ojibway language. + EARLY LIFE Frederic Baraga was born as Friderik Irenej Baraga in the manor house at Mala Vas (Germ. (see wiki) + MISSION TERRITORY In 1830, he answered the request of Bishop Edward Fenwick of Cincinnati for priests to aid in ministering to his growing flock, which included a large amount of mission territory. A year later Baraga was sent to the Ottawa Indian mission at Arbre Croche (now Cross Village, Michigan) to finish his mastery of the Ottawa language, which he had begun in Cincinnati. +
'OTAWA ANAMIE MISINAIGAN' This resulted in the publishing of "Otawa Anamie-Misinaigan", the first book written in the Ottawa language, which was a catechism and prayer book, in 1832. After a brief stay at a mission in present-day Grand Rapids, Michigan, he moved north to minister to the Ojibway (Chippewa) Indians at La Pointe, Wisconsin, an old Jesuit mission on Lake Superior, in 1835. (see wiki) + FIRST MIRACLE TO SAINTHOOD A tumor was found on a patient’s liver in various diagnostic tests. The patient, the patient’s family and their parish priest prayed for healing through the intercession of Bishop Baraga. Bishop Baraga’s stole was also placed on the patient’s abdomen, after which the patient’s pain ceased. An exploratory surgery by doctors found no tumor, according to the diocese. + OUR NEIGHBOR TO THE NORTH We (Rosary Workshop Guild) are in the diocese of Marquette Michigan and are very proud to share the good news that as of 10 May 2012, the first Bishop of Marquette has been declared Venerable, by Pope Benedict XVI. This is the first major step in the cause for Sainthood. Please continue to pray your personal rosary for him.
