The Community of Bethlehem had its humble beginnings in a French stable over 50 years ago. Because of this, the sisters named their new monastery 'Bethlehem' They chose St. Bruno of Cologne as their spiritual Father and took on the Gospel of silence and solitude as their spiritual focus. + Each of these beautiful statues is handmade by the sisters in the monastery of Mougeres France. They use a local dolomite stone from the Pyrenees in the south of France. It is crushed then resin is added so the stone may be cast. The wonderful thing about this stone, once reconstituted is that it takes on a rare patina when painted or may be left in its more natural ivoried matte state. Along with these wonderful statues, they also are known for their beautiful crèches and jewelry. + WHY STATUES? Why do Catholics have statues? Why Do Orthodox Churches have Icons of Christ, Mary and the saints? Read below. |

dolomite stone and resin
SAINT BERNADETTE by the Sisters of Bethlehem 4 inches: St Bernadette of Lourdes sits with two lambs as she prays her daily rosary. Bernadette and her little sister and a friend were sent to collect firewood when a very beautiful Lady appeared to her above a rose bush in a grotto called Massabielle. She was dressed in blue and white and smiled at Bernadette, then made the sign of the cross. She held a rosary of ivory and gold. Bernadette fell on her knees, took out her own rosary and began to pray the rosary. (Thursday, February 11, 1858) For more information,

Well, thats what I heard as a Protestant - And here is another one "Do Orthodox Churches use Icons for idol worship?" As a protestant, I believed this was true and that Catholics really were "Idol Worshippers"! Why would they do that? Why would they worship Mary over Jesus? Now that I am Catholic I know that is not true, that Mary intercedes, asks her Son for us, like any good friend we might ask to pray for us." But I know that many still do not understand! + There is so much richness in these sacramentals that one hates to see that this misunderstanding is still a sincere part of the hearts of many. No, Catholics are not to worship statues or Icons. They are simple reminders of a loving God and his family. How does one explain this to others? + VISUAL AIDS AND THE ARTS I believe one of the most beautiful explanation, was while touring the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, the church of the Holy Father. Huge statues line either side of the main part of the basilica leading up to the altar. The tour guide asked us to remember, the people of this period had no books, no media to teach them about famous people in the church so these statues are reminders, teachers if you will, visual aids - not unlike the statues we see in our own National Capitol in Washington DC. No, statues are not there to be worshipped, only to remind us of ways we can, not imitate their gifts and virtues but to lead lives of virtue by developing our own gifts given by God himself. |
