FOR SPECIAL DEVOTIONS St Benedict (St Benoit), is called upon for heavy duty prayer against evil and the medal is a prayer of exorcism (see below). He is known as the 'Founder of Western Monasticism. (OSB) He was born at Nursia, c. 480 and died at Monte Cassino, 543. + So these little chaplets with 3 sets of 3 beads have been around a long time, they have a history. Its more than just a tradition, as it appears, they also carried certain indulgences. A perfect prayer form of renewal in a busy day. + PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMIES MAKE PEACE BEFORE THE SETTING OF THE SUN
WHO WAS ST BENEDICT? According to New Advent (Catholic Encyclopedia) Benedict was the son of a Roman noble of Nursia, a small town near Spoleto, and a tradition, which St. Bede accepts, makes him a twin with his sister Scholastica. His boyhood was spent in Rome, where he lived with his parents and attended the schools until he had reached his higher studies. Then "giving over his books, and forsaking his father's house and wealth, with a mind only to serve God, he sought for some place where he might attain to the desire of his holy purpose; and in this sort he departed [from Rome], instructed with learned ignorance and furnished with unlearned wisdom" for more information see AMETHYST WINDOW BEADS - HAND CARVED BROWN MEDAL - EXORCISM - NINER PRAYER - NOVENA PRAYER SHOPPING CART - MORE LINKS (use back button to return to this page) |

~ ST BENEDICT MEDAL ~ |
There are many variations of the St Benedict medal (original being a cruciform) and we thought this was one of the finest and rarest we have seen. We loved the shape as compared to the traditional and more popular round Jubilee medal (struck in 1880 marking the 1400th anniversary of St. Benedict's birth) +
BASIC IMAGERY DATES BACK TO 1415 The basic imagery was found in a manuscript dated 1415. Medals bearing the image of St. Benedict, a cross, and these letters were first struck in Germany, and soon spread over Europe. They were first approved by Benedict XIV in his briefs of 23 December, 1741, and 12 March, 1742. + THE BLESSING The blessing is meant to call down Gods blessing and protection on us, our homes and possessions through the intercession of St Benedict. THE MEDAL: when held in devout use becomes a silent prayer and is a reminder of our dignity as followers of Christ. It is a prayer of exorcism (see below) and is worn around the neck, added to a rosary and set into the foundation of homes for protection. (We keep one on each of our computers) |
~ A PRAYER FOR EXORCISM ~ |
The medal is a prayer of exorcism against Satan, a prayer for strength in time of temptation, a prayer for peace among ourselves and among the nations of the world, a prayer that the Cross of Christ be our light and guide, a prayer of firm rejection of all that is evil, a prayer of petition that we may with Christian courage "walk in God's ways, with the Gospel as our guide," as St. Benedict urges us. (see OSB.org below) + A magnificent and unusua medal of St Benoit - reverse is tradititonal. Triune shape gives it a rare beauty. (1.5 in.) |
The reverse of the medal bears a cross with the initial letters of the words: "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux" THE HOLY CROSS BY MY LIGHT + written downward on the perpendicular bar; the initial letters of the words, "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux" LET NOT THE DRAGON BE MY GUIDE + on the horizontal bar; and the initial letters of "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" IN THE ANGELS OF THE CROSS + Round the margin stand the initial letters of the distich: "Vade Retro Satana, Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas" BEGONE, SATAN, DO NOT SUGGEST TO ME THY VANITIES EVIL ARE THE THINGS THOU PROFFEREST DRINK THOU THY OWN POISON + At the top of the cross usually stands the word Pax (peace). |
~ NINER PRAYERS ~ |
Our Father, Hail Mary. Glory Be + ON THE MEDAl: ask for the intercession of Saint Benedict. Some people use this as a nine day novena by adding their petition at this time. |
~ NOVENA PRAYERS ~ |

We believe the RosaryWorkshop.com is being directed to make our rosaries a more visual and symbolic journey of the dedication than it has in the past. You will not only see more of this direction used through color choices but in texture. When you see them, we hope you will be more visually in touch with the story. And when you pray them we hope 2000 years of history will melt. Not only with Our Lady as she tells the story of her beloved son, but with the one to whom the rosary is dedicated or the scripture passage that inspired it. We hope and pray this will help open up a 4th and new dimension of spirituality in your heart. |
