Patron saint of mothers, widows, wives, difficult marriages, alcoholism, victims of abuse, children who have gone astray, victims of adultery, unfaithfulness. + St Monica was born in North Africa of a Christian family in 333. Little is known of her childhood. Monica's oldest son, Augustine was born at Tagaste (Souk-Ahras), 13 November, 354, died 430 AD. Although he was raised a Christian, he fell vicitm of the pagan surroundings in which he lived. He sired a son and lived a sinful life much to the sadness of his mother, Monica. But she prayed for him for many years and her prayers were answered. + Saint Augustin et Sainte Monique

So these little 'Niner' chaplets with 3 sets of 3 beads have been around a long time, they have a history. Its more than just a tradition, as it appears, they also carried certain indulgences. Why such a large medal? We were inspired by pieces we saw in an antique shop in Munich several years ago that carried larger medals and reliquaries. We see the smaller medals more often these days and they are easier to keep in a pocket, but for home or altar use, the larger ones open up a moment of visual history that gifts us with a sense of a long lineage of prayer partners in the Communion of Saints. A beautiful medal for deep meditation and prayer for not only our sons and daughters but our grandchildren. |
