C9G - CHAPLETS 9 BEADS INDEX
Medals from Germany. Traditionally a 'niner' or a 9 bead chaplet, is called a 'novena chaplet' and the 'tenner' is used to count one decade of the rosary. The latter, popular with men since 15c as easier to carry.
+
INSPIRED BY SOMETHING OLD
Because we believe our visitors are unique amongst the internet family, we offer some new designs that were inspired by an item seen in an Antique Shop in Munich a few years ago. It was well over 100 years old. It was actually a large, 3 inch round crystal and gold reliquary box containing relics of about 10 saints.
+
RARE LOOK INTO HISTORY
This was not so unusual but what was different, was the fact that from it, hung a series of old beads.  It was a chaplet! Or had been before some of the beads broke and fell away into time.  A chaplet where prayers were offered, asking for the intercession of the saints whose relics were contained. Not one, but many!It was unusually large yet beautiful.
+
NOW AVAILABLE
AS A 9 OR 10 BEAD CHAPLET
This wonderful discovery has inspired the following now availalbe as either a 10 bead chaplet (standard Ave 'tenner') or as a 9 bead chaplet (Novena 'niner').  Read the history of the 9 bead 'niners'
SAINTS MEDALS
The exquisite saints medals (Germany) on the chaplets are about 2 in square and cast in solid bronze.  They are wonderful to set on your prayer table or on your home altar and are very powerful to pray.  There is something embracing about holding the medal in one hand and the beads in the other.  And when not in use, they are visually involving - evangelizing to - others in the room.

*PRAYERS*
So these little chaplets with 3 sets of 3 beads have been around a long time, they have a history.  Its more than just a tradition, as it appears, they also carried certain indulgences.   A perfect prayer form to renew in a busy day.
+
On each set of 3 beads - one each:
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be
+
On the medal:
ask for the intercession of this particular saint. Some people use this as a nine day novena by adding their petition at this time.

*ABOUT '9er'CHAPLETS*
THE RACCOLTA - a collection ...
More information on the traditional 'niner' chaplet may be found in an old book called THE RACCOLTA (A Collection). The Raccolta was first published in Rome by Telesforo Galli in 1807. This would put this practice of the 'niners' into at least the latter part of the 18c, and more likely the devotion was practiced, established and approved of long before it was written about. THE RACCOLTA  has been re published many times over the years but more recently by Benzeger Brothers in 1944 through 1957.  It contains prayers, devotions, novenas, pius practices etc and explains the indulgences that were attached and conditions needed to gain them at that time in history.  All the indulgences contained in THE RACCOLTA are/were applicable to the souls in purgatory. The book is still available through most Catholic Book Stores. I believe the St Jude Chaplet with its 9 beads is a good expample of this history.

YANKEE LADY ADDS:
Our friend Barbara Spears (Yankee Lady) listed 15 'NINER' chaplets with this configuration of beads and they were mostly for specific saints.  One was for the Consecration to the Holy Family, another for the dying (St Joseph), and another for the Acts of Adoration.
+
She also adds on her site" Many convents and monasteries created "niner" chaplets which they sold as a means for generating income. Niner chaplets were created for virtually any saint. Some niner chaplets were made as a straight line with 3 sets of 3 beads, a crucifix at one end and the saint's medal at the other end. Other niner chaplets were made as closed loops, with 3 sets of 3 beads and the saint's medal.
+
Regardless of the configuration, you invoke the saint's aid on the medal, say 3 Our Father, 3 Hail mary, and 3 Glory Be prayers on the beads, and say the Apostles Creed on the Crucifix (if there is one)."

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."  John 14:26-28

*YOUR COMMENTS*
... the medal is gorgeous ...
Thank you for being God's messenger through Mary!!! I received that beautiful Teresa of Avila niner chaplet and it is beautiful. The medal is gorgeous and so weighty....reminding us all of the weight we bear for this world and ourselves. It has so much meaning to me as I regard Teresa of Avila the greatest. She endured  many trials and became one of God's most chosen ones. Mary must love your workshop as it certainly covers the tears of our unhappiness through the gift of Mary's rosary, the chaplet. thnak you very much with Mary, Our Lady of Mt Carmel. Margaret J.   ... extraordinary ...
The niner chaplets are extraordinary!  Margot, you mentioned how you hold the medal in one hand and pray the beads w/the other.  Now I understand.  The medals are hearty!  No wimpy prayers for these chaplets!   Ladies, your work continues to leave me speechless...until I hold those lovely strands in my fingers, then my mouth finds the words to say.  Prayers to our Lord and Lady inspired by the work of your hands.  God bless you all.  Love,
Joell S (OH)

... recently I had a dream ...
Recently I had a dream about receiving beads from a friend, they were similar to the chapelets you supply. Incidentally I did not know you could get such things 'til I visisted your web site. Do you know of chapelets which have Blue beads and on the end there is a small statuet of a saint or something encased in glass with perhaps bronze edging.... Maureen N (USA)

... confirming words ...
Note:  Maureen wrote this on January 8. 2002. This was long before this page went up on June 2, 2002 -  A powerful confirmation of what I saw in the antique shop in Munich several years ago.  It is with this kind of input, through visions or dreams or actually seeing unusual rosaries and chaplets that gives us better insight on the ones that have long since been lost in time.  Special thanks to Maureen for sharing.
