THE MONTEREY CHAPEL

A PROJECT OF LOVE WITH AN UNEXPECTED ENDING
The project of creating a chapel large enough to house the ever growing parish after Father O'Connor came, became a work of love.  Given permission to use the old Powers Hall building on the campus of the Naval Postgraduate School, the families moved in and began its conversion.

WATCHING IT ALL COME TOGETHER
The cement floor was cleaned and swabbed with a range of browns, burgundys and terra cotta stains. Old pews became 'available' in the wink of an eye. The walls were painted a deep rich brown and the Rivard family began setting antiqued upholstery nails into 2x4 foot cork boards to create simple Stations of the Cross. (see below)

ALTAR OF THE MONTERY CHAPEL
Ruth Anne Petree created a large paneled crucifix along with side panels (see below) in antiqued hammered copper while Joan King  designed an altar of old  Eucalyptus logs.  Barbara Warren and Georgia Jordan designed and sewed up new vestments of natural looking fabrics and delivered them to the new chapel the day before our first Mass.

Mary, Star of the Sea,  a title given to Mary has been a devotion of people of the sea for centuries.  It is believed when St Jerome translated the Hebrew word 'mar' he used the Latin word 'stilla'.  'Yam'  is the Hebrew word for 'sea'.  The word 'Maryam',  Mary's name and would mean 'drop of the sea'.  When the Latin 'stilla' (drop) was read as 'stella' (star),  'Drop of the Sea' became  'Star of the Sea.'

OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA
Our Lady, Star of the Sea holds a fishing net, Father invited the men of the Parish to pin one of their medal to the net to carry on an old tradition of Military Personnel. The deep burnt orange carpet was rolled out for our opening mass. As we were finishing up the last days details, Admiral Bergin drove up in his car and opened the doors so we could hear his radio. It was friday. That's where we were when our president, John Francis Kennedy was shot and killed on November 22, 1963. Father dedicated the new chapel in memory of JF Kennedy.
