It was called 'French Jet' or when faceted,'Cut Jet'. It was a spin off of 'true jet' (See below). These are a very, very old hand pressed bead easily dating back to the 1860’s. When Queen Victoria lost her beloved Prince Albert in 1861 French Jet was used in jewelry as a fashion statement and became the rage in all of Europe and spread to America during the time of the Civil War and through the turn of the century. + EPHESIANS 1:18-19
+ INSPIRED BY VICTORIAN PERIOD The history of jet glass beads actually dates back to 13th century Bohemia and Czechoslovakia where the glass bead industry was serving the primary needs of the church. Its hard to know when the term 'Mourning Bead Rosary' was born. Did it find its use early on, and adapted during the Victorian reign for mourning purposes? It was customary to bury rosaries with the dead so they are few and far between. We know that rosaries made of carved bog oak wood (Ireland) are also very hard to find for this reason. Mourning Rosaries were also made of a sulpherized rubber called Vulcanite (Gutta-percha) - a type of latex. for more information see ROSARY - CHAPLET - ABOUT TRUE JET SHOPPING CART (use back button to return to this page) |

~ ABOUT TRUE JET ~ |
When jet was chosen by Queen Victoria as the official mourning jewelry for the royal court in 1861, she had no idea how this would move into the world of fashion. It also became very popular in America because of the loss of life during the Civil War and would heavily effect the color of beads used in rosaries during this century. It is known as 'French Jet' ABOUT TRUE JET
In the ‘Glossary of Mineralogy’ (1861) Henry Bristow states , ‘In the last century, 1200 men were employed in Aude alone, in carving and turning the jet of that area into beads, rosaries and [jewelry]. |
