JESUS PRAYER - PRAYER OF
THE HEART
This prayer
has its origins in the new testament and is very familiar to the ears and
eyes of those who love scripture. See the prayer petitions of the
tax collector's prayer (Luke 18:13);
God,
be merciful to me, a sinner'
and (Mark10:47),
Baritmaeus, who totally trusted Jesus cried out,
'Jesus,
Son of David, have mercy on me'.
Variations of
these prayers have a recorded history of use since the 6th century.
It has traditionally been used in its many forms by members of the Orthodox
Churches (Eastern, Russian, Greek). In recent years , it has become
a more widely used prayer by members of various christian churches, both
Protestant and Roman Catholic. We are called to 'pray without ceasing'
and this simple prayer is easy to remember. Because of this, it allows
one to reach a deeper level of prayer. Traditionally prayed as one inhales
(first part of prayer) and exhales (second part of prayer).
