and answers under many names but it's always Mary + FIRE + AIR + EARTH + WATER RDND: NATURAL DISASTER SERIES - WATER Our land suffers from floods, hurricanes, blizzards, snow storms and - lack of water. We live in an area that averages 50 inches of snow a year yet to the north of us they receieve over 300 inches of snow a year. + MORE THAN EVER BEFORE Weather related and Natural Disasters seem to surround us today more than ever before. Regardless of where we live, we are in the line of fire, be it hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, blizzards, flooding, We forget we have an army of intercessors in the communion of saints and of our Lady who will intercede for us to her Son, Jesus if we ask. + HENES PARK LAKE MENOMINEE MI. - SHORE OF GREEN BAY
+ HISTORY TELLS US This series is dedicated to the many ways she has protected us in the past and will in the future if we remember to pray for protection. She comes under many names but all the same Immaculate Conception, / Queen of Heaven. + JESUS LISTENS WHEN SHE SPEAKS! We have chosen these three devotions as powerful reminders of the love of the mother of Jesus and how she watches over her children during weather related and natural disasters that effect us all, or those of loved ones. She responds to our call through prayer to protect us before, during and after, if only we turn our eyes and heart to her in times of peril. Remember, her son Jesus listens to his mother when she intercedes! more information

MARK 4:38 Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” 41* n They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?” |

Our Lady of Caridad shares many titles including OUR LADY OF THE STORM and OUR LADY OF CHARITY. We delight in the fact as we are setting this series in place, our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XV1 is of this writing, visiting Santiago de Cuba. His visit to the Shrine of the “Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre” who is the patroness of Cuba. He shared: + "Dear Brothers and Sisters, I have come as a pilgrim to the house of the blessed statue of Our Lady of Charity, la Mambisa as you call upon her with affection. Her presence in this town of El Cobre is a gift from heaven for all Cubans." (We love God's timing as we had no idea he was going to be there to celebrate her 400th anniversary!) + OUR LADY OF CHARITY (Feast day 8) La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, began around 1608 (some say between 1604 and 1612 depending on the source). Two brothers, Rodrigo and Juan de Hoyos, and their young black slave, Juan Moreno, (traditionally known as the 'three Juans') set out to the Bay of Nipe for salt to preserve the meat used to feed the workers of the Copper (Cobre) mines. + a very rare medal showing the '3 Juans' in the boat under Our Lady's protection
+ OUR LADY OF THE STORM In 1687, Juan Moreno shared the following: As the three were going to the salt mines in their canoe when a violent storm arose. The waves rocked their tiny boat violently. Juan, the slave boy, was wearing a medal of the Virgin Mary. They began to pray for her protection. By morning the sea was calm and they left before daybreak in their canoe for the salt mines. + They saw something white above the foam that seemed to be coming towards them. The closer it got the more they realized it was Our Lady holding a baby floating on top of a small wooden plank. A tablet read ‘Yo soy la Virgin de la Carded” I am your Lady of Charity. + He continued to share that the Virgin was also dressed in real clothes and had real hair! Her skin color was that of a "mulatto", or a woman of mixed race. Her clothing was dry. Juan Moreno was 85 years old when he formally testified and this evidence may still be found in the General Archives of the Indies in Seville. + THE STATUE WAS GONE They took the statue to a local official who ordered a chapel built in her honor. One night, a visitor entered the locked chapel and discovered the statue was gone. A search party was unable to find it but the next morning, it was back. This happened 3 times. They decided she wanted to be in another place so the people of Barajugua took the statue to El Cobre and became known as "Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre” or "Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre". But she did not stay there either. + One day a young girl, Apolonia, while chasing butterflies and picking flowers, saw a statue on top of a small hill near the Sierra Maestra. Even though no one would believe her, eventually the statue was moved back to where she was discovered. This beautiful spot called Orient (El Cordoba) would be where freedom would be won for the black slaves (1886). It would also be where the Cubans began to revolt against the Spaniards. She is not as familiar to us under this name as is Our Lady of Guadelupe who is the patron of the Americas and of the Pre Born but still the same Lady! She was named patroness of Cuba by Benedict XV in 1916. +

Another beautiful title of Mary that translates in many ways that are similar and ones we recognize such as OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR, or OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP. We also see MOTHER of TENDERNESS and THEOTOKOS VLATIMIR which are similar icons . It also brings to mind the most recent of apparitions (1859) where Our Lady introduces herself to a sister in Wisconsin as OUR LADY OF GOOD HELP. Succor means 'help', 'relief from disaster', 'a need for aid', assistance in times of want, difficulty or distress, to run for aid. + OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR Is the patroness of Louisiana and was especially called on during the recent Hurricane Katrina (August 2005) yet the history goes back further: + OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR, HASTEN TO HELP US! + URSULINE ACADEMY - 1727 The Ursuline Academy for girls was founded in 1727. It is the oldest girls' school and the oldest Catholic school in the United States. (Especially seeing to the needs of slave or free creoles in the French Quarter) It was well established in 1815 when on January 7th General Andrew Jackson led his troops in the Battle of New Orleans. + PRAYER FOR MORE SISTERS By 1763, Louisiana had fallen under Spanish control. By 1800, the territory came back into French possession. Fearing the anti clerical sentiment of the French, many of the sisters fled to Cuba. With the loss of sisters, Mother applied for more nuns but feared may not be able to complete as the final word would have to come from the Pope who was a prisoner of Napoleon at that time! + HER ANSWERED PRAYER Mother St. Michael prayed before a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and said, "O most Holy Virgin Mary, if you obtain for me a prompt and favorable answer to this letter, I promise to have you honored at New Orleans under the title of Our Lady of Prompt Succor." Sending her petition on March 19, 1809, Mother St. Michael was delighted to receive a letter from the Holy Father granting her prompt request on April 29, 1809! She was granted permission to commission a statue of Our Lady holding the infant Jesus. The statue was placed in the Chapel, Dec 31, 1810. |
GREAT FIRE OF - 1812 + The first miracle: A great fire in New Orleans devastated the Vieux Carré. (French Quarter) The winds blew the fire towards Jackson Square where the Ursuline Convent was. It was facing destruction and the order went out to evacuate. At that moment Sister Anthony placed a small state of Our Lady of Prompt Succor on a window seat and the sisters began to pray "Our Lady of Prompt Succor, we are lost unless you hasten to our aid!" "Within minutes," it is said, "the wind turned back on itself, away from the convent and in a short time, the fire had lost its momentum and burned out, leaving the remainder of the city unharmed." + BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS - 1815 Three years after the fire, General Andrew Jackson led his troops into The Battle of New Orleans with 6,000 troops against the 15,000 British Troops. The Ursuline Nuns along with many faithful met in the Chapel before the statue of Our Lady, praying all night before the battle. In the morning Very Rev Dubourg offered Mass where Our Lady of Prompt Succor had been placed. A vow was made to have a Mass of Thanksgiving every year if the Americans won. + HEAVENLY INTERVENTION At communion, a courier came into the chapel and told those present that the British had been defeated. General Jackson visited the convent to thank the nuns for their prayers. He said: "By the blessing of heaven, directing the valor of the troops under my command, one of the most brilliant victories in the annals of war was obtained." A thanksgiving Mass has been said annually ever since. + HURRICANE KATRINA - 2005 Katrina means ‘Pure’ - Was Katrina a chastisement? . Many believe the hurricane was in response to the crimes, evil, and practices of voodoo, witchcraft and Mardi Gras caused New Orleans to be known as ‘Sin City’ + NOAA REPORT ON THE HURRICANE NOAA reported - On August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina was in the Gulf of Mexico where it powered up to a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale packing winds estimated at 175 mph” This storm was generated by 'unusually warm waters’ in the Gulf. Yet, before hitting shore, it dropped to a Category 3 sustaining winds of 125 mph. It landed East of New Orleans. The greatest loss of life was in New Orleans but the French Quarter (Vieux Carré ) where the image of Our Lady of Succor stood, was spared. + Although the French Quarter is thought of as the center of witchcraft and voodoo, the district as a whole is a National Historic Landmark and holds many historical buildings. It was affected relatively lightly by the hurricane in 2005, as compared to other areas of the city and the greater region with eventual flooding. + Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic hurricane of 2005. It was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest in the history of the US and the 6th strongest. At least 1,836 people died in the actual hurricane and in the subsequent flooding. Its remnants were felt all the way to the eastern Great Lakes region on August 31, where it was absorbed by a frontal boundary. The resulting extra tropical storm moved rapidly to the northeast and was felt in eastern Canada. + INTERESTING AFTER EFFECTS Before Hurricane Katrina, the murder rate in New Orleans was ten times higher than the U.S. average. After the situation in New Orleans was brought under control, criminal activity in New Orleans dropped significantly. Most of the major landmarks suffered only minor damage. The Quarter largely escaped the looting and violence after the storm; nearly all of the antique shops and art galleries in the French Quarter, were untouched. + REMEMBERING LILI Who was Lili? Lili was the next hurricane in 2005 to threaten New Orleans. It was a category 4 as it hovered over the Gulf, not yet reaching shore and gathering strength over the warm gulf by the hour. Then suddenly it simply dropped to a cat 1 with winds dropping from 145 mph to 70 mph baffling the experts. "It will be the subject of "many Ph.D. dissertations." said Meteorologist Lixion Avila. One has to ponder, 'Was it again intercessory prayer?' + We have been told that prayer can stave off storms (Medjugorje) Our lady reminded us "... that through prayer and fasting we can even suspend the laws of nature." |
When Louisiana passed into the control of the United States, the Ursuline sisters anxiously sent President Jefferson a letter asking if their property rights would be honored by the new government. The response from Jefferson is still kept at the convent. + "I have received, holy sisters, the letter you have written me wherein you express anxiety for the property vested in your institutions by the former governments of Louisiana," wrote the President. "The principles of the Constitution and government of the United States are a sure guarantee to you that it will be preserved to you sacred and inviolate, and that your institution will be permitted to govern itself according to its own voluntary rules, without interference from the civil authority ... Be assured it will meet all the protection which my office can give it |
Holy Mary, Gentle Mother, cradle within your arms those who have died, and intercede for those who mourn them. + Notre Dame de Bon Secours, patron of New Orleans, be with those who suffer so greatly. + Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, patron of Mobile, pray for the courage and faith of all the victims. + FOR THE INTERCESSION OF THE SAINTS + Good Saint Joseph, patron of Baton Rouge, comfort those who have lost the ones they loved, and bring them peace. + Saint Francis of Assisi, patron of the poor, pray for that God might show us the way to relieve the terrible sufferings of these days. + Saint Christopher, who bore the Christ across the waters, deliver us from the waters of this flood. + Good Saint Anthony, Patron of the lost, lead all who are stranded or homeless back to those who love them. + Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, look upon your beloved people, that Christ might restore all that has been lost. + A PRAYER TO THE MOST BLESSED TRINITY + God of all creation, who led the chosen people into the promised land, lead the homeless to a place of refreshment and rest. + Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell, and rose again, raise up all who are fallen, broken or alone. + Spirit of life, inspire our hearts and give us the strength to come to help of our brothers and sisters in need |
Mary identified herself as, "I am the Lady of the Rosary", and continued, " I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and to ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend our Lord any more, for he is already to grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the rosary. Let them continue saying it every day." |
