(for more information on rosaries, scroll down) + TILMA OF JUAN DIEGO VI RSDA - SEEDS OF ASSISI SERIES DID YOU KNOW: the Bishop secretly prayed for a sign of roses in December) But did you ever wonder if there were 59 roses as in a rosary? We will never know! + WHO WAS JUAN DIEGO? When Cortez hit land in 1519 he had two Franciscans with him. By 1521 the King of Spain requested more Franciscan missionaries and they arrived in 1524 with little statues, crucifixes and rosaries to evangelize the indigenous. But not until the miracle of the tilma in 1531 did the simple garment worn by a newly baptized Christian named Juan Diego hold roses and an image of Our Lady. This was when conversions happen in great numbers. Who was Juan Diego and why is he now a saint of the church? + CORAL / TURQUOISE / WOOD WERE CHOSEN ELEMENTS OF THE AZTECS AND OF GUADALUPE, THE ONE WHOSE SON CRUSHES THE HEAD OF THE SERPENT + PSALM 147:20
DID YOU KNOW? That Christopher Columbus, a third order Franciscan, renamed his 3 ships when he visited a Spanish shrine before setting off to the west? NINA (girl) PINTA (paint) and the SANTA MARIA (St Mary). Did you know the desire to travel happened 40 years (1491) before the image appeared on Juan Diego's Garment in 1531? - on Columbus' 40th year of life? And given permission by the queen? It took one year to prepare, thus set sail in 1492, not 1491. + Did you know the Spanish Shrine he visited before sailing is called Guadalupe? Why roses? (Yes the Bishop secretly prayed for a sign of roses in December) But did you ever wonder if there were 59 as in a rosary? We will never know! + RSDA SERIES We think of Fr Serra and other Franciscans, Jesuits and Dominicans who helped settle the Southwest and California coast. We can imagine they probably did not come heavily laden with rosaries to share or replace their own losses but may have made rosaries using seeds, shells, pebbles or wood along the way. This collection of our Franciscan Inspired rosaries (RSDA) tries to imitate what natural materials were available and may have been used.
