(old amber crom Poland - where Father was from / pierced wood) FATHER JERZY POPIELUSZKO RSTS.21568.2 |
(for more information, scroll page down) + BLESSED FATHER JERZY POPIELUSZKO RSTS: SAINTHOOD SERIES "Let us pray, so that we are free from fear, intimidating, and feelings of revenge and violence”. + JERZY POPIELUSZKO
+ WHO WAS FATHER JERZY? Jerzy Popieluszko: Born in Okopy near Suchowola (Poland), 14 September 1947 (Feast of the Holy Cross), martdyred on 19 October 1984 Father Jerzy was a Polish Roman Catholic priest in a Communist land. He was a good priest, gentle spoken in a land where 95% of the Polish people were Catholic. + Under Communist rule, The Polish people were told by the Police "No prayer, no Mass, no Rosaries, no Prayer Groups allowed". then something happened: + THEN SOMETNING HAPPENED IN 1979 In 1979, Karol J?zef Wojtyla came home as Pope John Paul II to visit and encourage his fellow countrymen under the Communist rule. Father Jersey was in the crowd and heard the Pope say the following words which we still echo today: + "BE NOT AFRAID"
INSPIRED Father heard these simple but powerful words of the Holy Father in his heart. He was inspired by these words of encouragement and Father Jerzy began to speak out. In September of 1980 he heard about a newly formed trade union at the Gdansk Shipyard. + SODALITY He became associated with the opposition Solidarity (Polish trade union - Also see Lech Walesa). Father became their Advocate, Spiritual Advisor (Chaplain). There were over 10 million members by the end of the first year and growing. The numbers startled Father Jerzy at first. + FATHER JERZY SAID:
BEGINNING OF THE FALL OF COMMUNISM? Father Jerzy's sermons were routinely broadcast by Radio Free Europe which made him famous throughout Poland during the early 80s. The Communists tried to silence him but were unsuccessful. There was no compromise against the ruling forces yet the people heard the words of the young Priest and held to them. It is believed this stand was the first signs of the fall of Communism in central and Eastern Europe. for more information

The "Black Madonna of Czestochowa", protectress of Poland
+ AVE BEADS: We purchased these precious amber beads from some lovely ladies from Poland years ago. When looking at the bag, we noticed a sign that said they were from Gdansk Poland, where much of the events happened. (Note, the inner flash of light makes beads appear rough. Each bead is actually very smooth.) PATER BEADS: Pierced wooden beads, giving the sense of woumdedness, of the piercing and torture experienced by Father Jerzy on his death. + OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA The 'Black Madonna of Czestochowa' icon is intimately associated with Poland for the past six hundred years. Its history prior to its arrival in Poland is shrouded in numerous legends which trace the icon's origin to St. Luke who painted it on a cedar table top from the house of the Holy Family. The same legend holds that the painting was discovered in Jerusalem in 326 by St. Helena, who brought it back to Constantinople and presented it to her son, Constantine the Great. + MEDALS AVAILABLE INDIVIDUALLY To see all our parts, go to SUPPLIES LINK at top of page. Shortly after sharing these words below, Father was followd home and arrested. He escaped but was caught again. He was tied up amd brutally beaten beyond recognition and thrown into the canal to die. For 11 days, no one knew hat hat happened to him.
MARTYRDOM He was murdered in 1984 by three agents of the internal intelligence agency, (Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs) who were shortly thereafter tried and convicted of the murder. 9 DAYS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD In Warsaw, in 1979, on his first visit back to his native war torn Poland as the pope, he simply said:
+ A PEACEFUL REVOLUTION Credited with being instrumental in bringing down Communism in Central and Eastern Europe, by being the spiritual inspiration behind its downfall and catalyst for "a peaceful revolution" in Poland. Lech Walesa, founder of 'Solidarity', credited John Paul II with giving Poles the courage to demand change. According to Walesa, "Before his pontificate, the world was divided into blocs. + FATHER JERZY SPREAD THE WORD Nobody knew how to get rid of Communism. Father Jerzy Popieluszko spread this word of peace and the people responded. + THEN DOWN CAME 1961 - THE BERLIN WALL - 1989 (and the Cold War was about to end) |
*REMEMBERING FIRST HAND* |
I asked Father Joe If he was familiar with Fr Jerzy and he said, " Yes. My neighbor was from Poland, Stella knew the family of Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko and she was familiar with the village of Okopy located in North Eastern Poland. + She said: "Fr Jerzy Popieluszko never took the communist ration cards for food but trusted the Lord Jesus to feed him. Sometimes his only food was the Eucharist for weeks. Stella said her family followed Fr Jerzy Popieluszko’s example of not accepting the communist ration cards, they prayed the rosary together as a family praying for food, and their large family always had something to eat. Father Joe said, "The Family made the best cabbage pie I have ever eaten." |
"My Family is from Poland. When I visit relatives I am reminded of how they put us to shame as Catholics" . (95 % of Poland is Catholic.) |
FIRST HAND STORIES OF THIS TIME PERIOD? PLEASE SHARE any personal experiences to share regarding this time period. People are waking up to this blessed Priest and what happened when he simply told the truth. We must pray he intercedes for our ourt Nation and those of the hole word as our enemy today has a new name. + BECOMING A SAINT Fr. Jerzy is now blessed and we look forward to his sainthood. The more people who know about this Priest of truth, the better. + COLD WAR EXPERIENCE All I remember from this Cold War period was hearing about the 'Solidarity Movement' and Lech Walesa, founder of 'Solidarity', but had no idea it led into the downfall of the Communist party in Europe through a priest named Father Jerzy Popieluszko who spoke only the truth to the Polish people. + HERE IN THE STATES Our only Cold War (Missile Crisis) experience was my Navy husband who ran clandestine operations (submarine) delivering frogmen UDT Teams off the coast of Cuba. Thank God I never knew how close we came to all out war with nuclear devices planted by the Soviets just 90 miles from our coast in Cuba. |
*WORDS MEANT FOR TODAY?* |
Re read these words spoken by Fr Jerzy. They are not just past history. They are alive today. Not Just about Poland and Communism in the 80s, but alive today --- truth against today's enemies by another name. Scripture reminds us: 2 CORINTHIANS 3:16,17 (nab)
REFLECTING ON HIS WORDS TODAY When a government tries to impose untruths, when it distorts history, when it crushes attempts to live by ordinary moral values, then we must speak out. We must conquer hatred with love, lies with truth, anger and fear with courage and hope. This applied in Poland under Communism, but it applies anywhere, at any time. So if, for example, a government without necessarily being crude, or brutal about it tries to impose the beliefs on marriage to right to life, then we must speak out and tell the truth. And this applies when such untruths are imposed on children in schools, or public figures are bullied into silence on the subject, or if the Church is so bullied. + THE PEOPLE HEARD The words of the Priest spoke to the hearts of the people and they began to gather against the opposition.
HIS ONLY WEAPON WAS TRUTH (let his words speak to us now, today. The enemy of world peace simply has another name) + INTERCESSORY PRAYER Ask hin to interced for us. Our enemy today has a new name but the truth will set us free. Pray for good leadership, pray for our nation, pray for the whole world. "For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world." |
