THE BLACK MADONNA OF POLAND + LUKAN TRADITION: It is believed the BLACK MADONNA ICON was "written"by the artist St Luke on the table top built by her son, Jesus forhis mother, Mary. During the painting, Mary told St Luke about the events in the Life of Jesus which Luke used in his gospel ..... + HODEGETRIA ("One Who Shows the Way").
(click icon for larger image) + 326 ..... And when in 326 ad, St Helen went to Jerusalem to search for the true cross, she found this icon of Our Lady and gave it to her son, Constantine. He had a shrine built for it. During the critical battle with the Saracens, the portrait was displayed from the walls of Constantinople and the Saracens were subsequently routed. The portrait was credited with saving the city. + 11th CENTURY The icon was eventually owned by Charlemagne who gave it to Prince Leo of Ruthenia (northwest Hungary). It remained at the royal palace in Ruthenia until an invasion occurred in the 11th century. The king prayed to Our Lady to aid his small army and as a result of this prayer a darkness overcame the enemy troops who, in their confusion, began attacking one another. + 14th CENTURY Ruthenia was saved as a result of this intervention by Our Lady. In the 14th century, it was transferred to the Mount of Light (Jasna Gora) in Poland in response to a request made in a dream of Prince Ladislaus of Opola. + 1430 MAJOR DAMAGE Bandits tried to take the Icon of our Lady of Czestochowa icon during Holy Week in 1430 but could not lift it, it had become too heavy to budge. With that, the bandits pierced her face with a sword. Unable to restore the Icon, they painted a new one as a 'genuine copy' including the desecration, the sword slashes on her face and neck. May be found in Jasna Gora. + 1656 - 1717 QUEEN OF THE POLISH CRWN The turn of the tide of war came with the victory of Our Lady of Czestochowa at Jasna Góra In 1656, the Polish Kin Casimir proclaimed her, the Mother of God as the "Queen of the Polish Crown" and a crown was placed on her head. |

+ 1920 - RUSSIAN ARMY / WARSAW On September 15, the FEAST OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS, As Russia was about to cross over the Vistula River into Warsaw, the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa was seen in the clouds over Warsaw and the Russian Army retreated. Five years later, in 1925, Pope Pius XI designated May 3rd as the feast day of Our Lady of Czestochowa. + 1931 - JESUS I TRUST IN YOU on the night of Sunday, 22 February 1931, while in her cell Jesus appeared to a Polish Nun by the name of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska. He came as the "King of Divine Mercy" and wore a white garment with red and pale rays emanating from his heart. In her diary (Notebook I, items 47 and 48) she wrote that Jesus told her: + "Jezu, ufam Tobie"
"I BEAR A SPECIAL LOVE FOR THE POLISH NATION" Sister Faustina heard these words as she prayed for Poland;
+ 1945 - NATION REEDUCATED After Poland was liberated from Nazi occupation, 1.5 million people gathered at Jasna Góra to rededicate the nation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Pope John Paul II visited the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa four times during his pontificate. Our Lady's intercession is credited with the liberation of Poland from Communist rule. 1979 - BE NOT AFRAID
