~ SWAROVSKI CRYSTAL ~ |
What is crystal? What makes it different from glass? 'When a mineral, or a chemical substance prepared by man, is bounded by regularly arranged natural plane surfaces, giving the specimen a definite geometrical form or outline, the substance is said to be a crystal.' (Gems and Gem Minerals). In 1892, Daniel Swarovski applied for a patent to begin a family adventure in man made crystals. In 1908: Swarovski and his three sons experiment with different methods to produce pure crystal and were able to refine it into a state of flawless brilliance. By 1956 they had developed a technique called 'aura borealis' giving the surface a soft rainbow effect. It is now the purest form of man made crystal available and is still run as a family business. +
OVER 5000 YEARS OF GLASS MAKING The discovery of glass and crystal goes back to at least 3000 to 2000 BC. The first account of the making of glass comes from Pliny. (first century AD) who wrote about some Phoenician sailors who camped one night on a beach and after lighting a fire, began to cook their meal. The next morning they noticed that the sand had fused where the fire had been. This resulted from the fact that they has set their cooking pots on blocks of natron (soda). The same effect (Obsidian) has been caused by lightning strikes in the desert or on a beach and through volcanic action since time began. It is interesting to see how man has taken a mistake and perfected it in such a way as to re create crystal, crystal that is clearer that the natural crystals found growing on rocks. + SWAROVSKI RESPONSE TO LEAD CONCERNS 'Crystal has unique properties. While made with lead, the crystal manufacturing process creates a matrix which greatly retards the mobility of lead. By contrast, lead in other materials such as unplated metal containing lead may be available for surface exposures. Swarovski believes that the use of their products poses no significant risk to human health.' |
