A VISIT TO THE STUDIO IN KINSALE
IRELAND
'The Wild Goose
is at home in three elements: earth, air and water and is the symbol of transition and change.' + 'The Flight of the Wild Geese is linked to the exodus of respected Irishmen in the 17th and 18th century' (from the Wild Goose Catalog) |
What is a wild goose? The lake next to the studio here in Michigan is home for wild geese. Here they lay their eggs, nurse and teach their young. School starts about 10 every the morning. Tiny fluff balls bob in a row behind their teacher. Soon they are swimming, diving and then one day, they are taking off and landing! Then they are gone. Gone with their kinsfolk forming a breathtaking sight as they head south. Yet they are back every spring and proudly bring their new families back home ... + ... But this is not what it means in Ireland. We were told that the Wild Geese were the young men of Ireland who left their native land for military service in Europe and America from the 1600s on. Had they stayed home, the gentlemen Irish would likely had found themselves poor and destitute because of the intended takeover of Ireland by the British. + The desire was to retain their family names and honors for their families. They would return home one day when things improved but this dream was lost in time. Instead, they fell in love and married in these new lands. Today the Irish spirit is alive all over the world! Meabh shows us how the molds are made to form the shells of the designs of the Studio. |
Each bronze and iron design has its own mold. A shell is cast then filled with resin ... |
... it is polished to perfection. Here you see its natural state (l), then when polished (r). |
The most difficult thing was to decide which ones would find their way home to our website. |
James learns how to burn off the strong cords that will be used on the back of the plaques. |
Natalie and James are trying to decide which piece is their favorite. It was very hard. |
Kinsale is a charming little seaport village full of history and excellent cuisine. |
Brightly colored shops line the streets as they work their way down to the waterfront. |
Our committee is making final decisions on the designs to be shipped to the Rosary Workshop in the US. |
