Died martyred c.117. She was buried in Catacomb of Callisto (Rome) in 817. Cecilia was a maiden of noble birth and when she was young, she dedicated her life to the Lord with the vow of chastity. Her family arranged her marry a young noble named Valerian. On her wedding day, she prayed to the Lord asking for protection of her virginity. The records share "The day on which the wedding was to be held arrived and while musical instruments were playing she was singing in her heart to God alone saying: Make my heart and my body pure that I may not be confounded" (McKinnon 46). Her prayers were answered, and Valerian agreed to protect her virginity. He and is brotherTiburtius were both converted to Christianity, which was still illegal. They were both baptized by Pope Urban I. + Valerian and his brother Tiburtius were martyred. When Cecilia was martyred, her executioners tried twice but were unable to kill her. They first locked her inside the bath room of her own home and tried to suffocate her with by the steam. She emerged from the bath unharmed and then the tried to behead her but they failed again.. For three days she lay in her own blood and in great pain but was able to give her assets to the poor and donate her home to the church. + + SAINT CECILIA +

So these little 'Niner' chaplets with 3 sets of 3 beads have been around a long time, they have a history. Its more than just a tradition, as it appears, they also carried certain indulgences. Why such a large medal? We were inspired by pieces we saw in an antique shop in Munich several years ago that carried larger medals and reliquaries. We see the smaller medals more often these days and they are easier to keep in a pocket, but for home or altar use, the larger ones open up a moment of visual history that gifts us with a sense of a long lineage of prayer partners in the Communion of Saints. A beautiful medal for deep meditation and prayer for not only our sons and daughters but our grandchildren. |
